The collapse occurred at No. 42 Governors Road in the Aboru area of Alimosho Local Government, as confirmed by the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA).
According to LASEMA, their emergency response team arrived shortly after receiving a distress call, only to find workers trapped under the debris. Efforts to extricate the victims were swift; two adult males were successfully rescued and administered first aid before being transported to a nearby medical facility for further treatment. Sadly, another male worker was recovered deceased from the rubble.
As of the latest reports, LASEMA, along with the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service and the Lagos State Ambulance Service (LASAMBUS), continues to conduct recovery operations at the site. The agencies have reiterated the importance of compliance with building regulations, emphasizing the need for developers and construction teams to engage certified professionals, especially in potentially hazardous activities such as demolition.
The agency urged, "Residents and developers must prioritize safety and adhere to all necessary regulations to prevent the recurrence of such tragic incidents."
This incident has once again spotlighted the challenges and risks associated with building regulations in Lagos, where unauthorized constructions and unsafe demolition practices have led to previous tragedies. As the recovery efforts proceed, the community is left mourning the loss and reflecting on the urgent need for improved safety standards.
