In a poignant appeal to the Federal Government, Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), emphasized the critical need for enhanced security measures in communities ravaged by violence. Following a visit to an Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) camp in Mangu Local Government Area of Plateau State, Obi expressed his concern over the plight of over 45,000 displaced individuals, many of whom have been forced to flee their homes due to terrorist attacks.

Obi's visit came after he was unable to reach Yelwata in Benue State, where he had intended to meet with families affected by recent turmoil. He described the conditions in Mangu as “deeply disturbing,” stating that more than 20 communities have been reportedly sacked by armed groups. “These are Nigerians who want nothing more than to return to their ancestral homes, rebuild their communities, cultivate their farms, and live their lives in peace and dignity,” he remarked, underscoring the urgent need for government action.

During his time at the IDP camp, which houses over 500 displaced persons, Obi extended support to affected families as a gesture of solidarity. He reiterated the importance of collective responsibility, stating, “As I have always maintained, as long as there is one displaced Nigerian, all Nigerians should be concerned.” His call to action aims not only to address the immediate needs of those displaced but also to foster a broader dialogue on national security and community resilience.

Obi's statements reflect a growing concern among Nigerian leaders about the escalating crisis of displacement and insecurity in various regions. As communities continue to face threats from violent groups, the need for a comprehensive strategy to protect citizens and restore stability has never been more pressing.
