In a recent media chat held at the Michael Okpara Auditorium in Umuahia, Governor Alex Otti of Abia State elaborated on his administration's strategic choice to prioritize electric vehicles (EVs) over Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) buses for public transport. Otti emphasized the technological advancement that EVs represent, stating, “We chose electric vehicles for our public transportation system because they signify an upgrade in transportation technology.”
The governor clarified that while the state is moving towards electric buses, it does not dismiss the potential of CNG. He confirmed that plans are underway to establish additional CNG stations in Abia, which would primarily serve privately owned vehicles rather than the public transport system. “We are not opposed to CNG, but we chose electric vehicles for our public transportation system,” he reiterated, highlighting the different propulsion systems used by EVs compared to internal combustion engines found in petrol and CNG vehicles.
Otti also noted the economic benefits of CNG, acknowledging it as a cheaper alternative to petrol. He expressed optimism about the growing interest in converting petrol and diesel vehicles to CNG, indicating a positive trend in the adoption of alternative fuel sources across Nigeria. “There are Nigerian companies that specialize in converting internal combustion engine vehicles to CNG,” he added, reinforcing the state's commitment to diversifying its transportation energy sources.
“The proposed CNG stations will cater to privately owned vehicles and other consumers,” Otti stated, indicating a balanced approach to energy use in transportation.
As Abia State moves towards a more sustainable public transport system, the decision to embrace electric vehicles aligns with global trends towards greener technologies. This shift not only aims to enhance the efficiency of public transport but also positions the state as a progressive player in the national dialogue on energy and transportation.
