EFCC Challenges Diezani's Intent to Introduce UK Acquittal in Asset Recovery Case
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has firmly rejected former oil minister Diezani Alison-Madueke's attempt to present evidence of her acquittal by a UK court in a related Abuja case. The commission argues that the UK ruling holds no relevance to the ongoing legal proceedings concerning the recovery of her seized assets.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has raised objections to the efforts of former Minister of Petroleum Resources, Diezani Alison-Madueke, to introduce evidence from a UK court ruling that acquitted her of corruption charges. This legal maneuver comes amid ongoing proceedings in Nigeria concerning the recovery of assets linked to her tenure in office.
In a recent court session, the EFCC argued that the judgment delivered by a UK court should not influence the Abuja case, asserting its irrelevance to the asset recovery process. The commission emphasized that the Nigerian courts must adjudicate based on local laws and context, independent of foreign legal interpretations.
"The UK judgment does not pertain to the specific issues at hand in the Nigerian courts, and thus should not be considered in our proceedings," an EFCC representative stated.
Diezani, who has faced multiple allegations of corruption and financial mismanagement during her time in office, has been actively contesting the seizure of her assets. She had hoped that the UK court’s acquittal would bolster her defense in Nigeria, but the EFCC's stance indicates a determined effort to pursue financial restitution for the state.
As the case unfolds, legal experts are closely monitoring the implications of this dispute, particularly in relation to Nigeria's asset recovery framework and the precedence it may set for future cases involving high-profile figures accused of corruption.
