Dr. Brendan Innocent Usoro, the Executive Chairman of Miden Systems Limited, has issued a stern warning regarding the rising threat of fake news and artificial intelligence-generated misinformation in the lead-up to Nigeria's 2027 general elections. Speaking at the Nigerian Press Council's National Summit on Curbing Fake News and Misinformation, held in Abuja, Usoro emphasized that the proliferation of digital misinformation poses significant risks not only to the electoral process but also to national security and corporate integrity.
Usoro was honored at the summit for his commitment to corporate governance and business integrity, where he addressed an audience comprising media practitioners, government officials, and corporate executives. He pointed out that advancements in artificial intelligence have made it increasingly easier to create convincing fake audio and video content, complicating the public's ability to discern genuine news from falsehoods. “The consequences of this misinformation extend beyond politics; they can damage corporate reputations and erode public trust,” Usoro stated.
The summit, organized by the Federal Ministry of Information and National Orientation, sought to bring together key stakeholders to discuss strategies for combating misinformation and promoting responsible journalism. Usoro highlighted how misinformation is often weaponized to undermine political opponents and disrupt social harmony, warning that the misuse of such tactics could lead to increased social tensions and distrust among the populace.
“People use false information to de-market their political opponents, competitors’ products and services, as well as create tension in the polity,” Usoro noted, calling for collaborative efforts to address the challenges posed by misinformation.
As Nigeria prepares for its next general elections, the need for vigilance and proactive measures against misinformation becomes more critical. The summit's discussions aim to foster a media environment where factual reporting is upheld, ensuring that the integrity of both corporate and electoral processes is preserved.
