In a remarkable medical feat, a 19-year-old male motorcycle accident victim has survived a life-threatening emergency brain surgery at the Abia State Specialist Hospital and Diagnostic Centre in Umuahia. The young man was admitted on October 4 in a deep coma, presenting a Glasgow Coma Scale (GCS) score of six out of 15, which unfortunately deteriorated to five before the surgical intervention. Doctors quickly determined that massive bleeding inside his skull necessitated immediate action to prevent further brain damage.
Commissioner for Information, Prince Okey Kanu, revealed the details of this critical case during a briefing at the Government House in Umuahia, following a State Executive Council meeting led by Governor Alex Otti. The Commissioner for Health, Prof. Enoch Uche, who is also a neurosurgeon, confirmed that the bleeding was exerting pressure on the patient's brainstem, making timely surgical intervention essential. Prof. Uche noted, “Transferring the patient to another facility could have proved fatal, given the severity of his condition.”
Thanks to the advanced medical facilities and skilled neurosurgeons now available in the state, the four-hour surgery was successfully executed. More than 100 milliliters of blood clot were evacuated from the patient's brain, and he has since shown signs of recovery, including movement in his limbs while being monitored in the Intensive Care Unit.
The successful surgery highlights significant advancements in healthcare capacity within Abia State, a development that has been emphasized by local authorities. The Chief Medical Director of the hospital expressed optimism regarding the patient's recovery, underscoring the importance of having specialized medical personnel and resources locally available to handle such emergencies.
