Peter Obi, the former governor of Anambra State and a prominent figure in Nigerian politics, was met with chaos during his recent visit to Benue State, as armed thugs interrupted his scheduled engagements for the second time. This incident follows a similar disruption in April 2025, when Governor Hyacinth Alia halted Obi's visit to internally displaced persons (IDPs) in the state, citing security and protocol issues.

The latest disturbance raises serious concerns about the safety of political figures in Nigeria, especially in regions where political tensions run high. Eyewitnesses reported that the thugs, allegedly acting on behalf of political opponents, attempted to intimidate both Obi and his supporters, forcing the cancellation of his public appearances.

In light of these events, Obi's supporters have condemned the violence, calling it a blatant attack on democracy and the right to free speech. "This is not just an attack on Peter Obi; it is an attack on the people of Benue who deserve the opportunity to engage with their leaders," a spokesperson for Obi stated.

“We will not be intimidated by these acts of violence. Our commitment to the people of Nigeria remains unwavering,” Obi emphasized during a brief address following the disruption.

This incident highlights the ongoing challenges faced by political leaders in Nigeria, where the political landscape is often marred by violence and intimidation. As the nation approaches new elections, the need for a more secure environment for political discourse becomes increasingly critical.
