The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) and the Civil Society Legislative Advocacy Centre (CISLAC) have jointly urged authorities to conduct a transparent investigation into the tragic deaths of 37 suspects detained for illegal mining activities. Their call reflects a broader concern regarding the treatment of detainees and the need for accountability in law enforcement practices.
Reports indicate that the 37 individuals died under questionable circumstances while in detention, raising alarm bells among human rights advocates. The NHRC emphasized that such incidents undermine the rule of law and the fundamental rights of individuals, regardless of the alleged crimes they may have committed.
“We cannot allow such incidents to go unaddressed. Every life matters, and the circumstances leading to these deaths must be thoroughly investigated,” said an NHRC spokesperson.
CISLAC echoed these sentiments, highlighting the importance of transparency in the investigative process to restore public trust in law enforcement. They insisted that an independent body should oversee the inquiry to ensure impartiality and thoroughness.
The call for an investigation comes at a time when illegal mining has become a significant issue in Nigeria, contributing to environmental degradation and conflicts in various regions. As the government grapples with regulating the mining sector, the deaths of these suspects serve as a grim reminder of the urgent need for reform and respect for human rights within the justice system.
