A civil society organization known as BBDYI has brought to light significant ethical considerations surrounding the use of artificial intelligence (AI) in Nigeria's electoral process. As the 2027 elections approach, the group is advocating for the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to establish clear safeguards aimed at protecting women politicians from potential digital threats, including harassment and misinformation.
The call for ethical guidelines stems from increasing concerns that AI technologies could exacerbate existing inequalities and vulnerabilities within the political landscape. BBDYI emphasizes the need for transparency in the deployment of AI tools, arguing that without proper regulations, these technologies could be misused to manipulate public opinion or undermine the integrity of the electoral process.
In a statement, BBDYI highlighted that the rise of digital platforms presents both opportunities and challenges for political engagement, particularly for women. “To ensure a fair and equitable electoral environment, it is crucial that INEC prioritizes the protection of women in politics by implementing robust mechanisms to combat digital threats,” the group stated.
“The use of AI in electoral processes must be approached with caution, ensuring that the rights and safety of all candidates, especially women, are safeguarded,” BBDYI added.
As Nigeria gears up for a pivotal election cycle, the role of technology in governance and political participation is increasingly under scrutiny. The recommendations made by BBDYI could set a precedent for how electoral bodies handle technological advancements while maintaining democratic integrity.
