Falana Advocates for State and Local Government Accountability Amidst Central Control
Human rights lawyer Femi Falana has called on Nigerians to demand greater accountability from their state and local governments, criticizing the persistent financial control exerted by state authorities despite a recent Supreme Court ruling.

In a compelling address, renowned human rights lawyer Femi Falana has urged Nigerians to shift their focus from solely holding the federal government accountable to also demanding transparency and responsibility from state and local governments. His remarks come in light of the Supreme Court's ruling in July 2024, which challenged the financial authority of state governments over local councils.
Falana's critique centers on the ongoing control that state authorities maintain over local government finances, which he argues undermines democratic governance at the grassroots level. "The local governments are meant to be the closest to the people, yet they are shackled by the financial dominance of state administrations," he stated during a recent public forum.
He emphasized that citizens must actively participate in governance beyond the capital, Abuja, to foster accountability and ensure that resources are allocated effectively. "Local governments should be empowered to manage their finances independently to better serve their communities," Falana added, calling for collective action from Nigerians to insist on their rights.
Furthermore, Falana's arguments resonate with ongoing discussions about the need for decentralization in Nigeria's political framework. Critics argue that the current structure stifles local development and breeds corruption, making it imperative for citizens to hold their leaders accountable at all levels.
"We must not be passive in our governance; every Nigerian has a role to play in demanding accountability from their local leaders," Falana asserted.
