The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has sounded the alarm over a troubling rise in political violence in Sokoto State, following an alleged gun attack on its governorship candidate, Manir Muhammad Dan’iya, at the Sultan Abubakar III International Airport. The incident, which occurred on October 30, 2026, has prompted the party to call for urgent investigations by law enforcement agencies to ensure the safety of its members and the integrity of the upcoming elections.
During a press conference, the ADC highlighted the attack on Dan’iya, also known as Walin Sokoto, whose convoy was reportedly targeted by suspected gunmen shortly after his arrival at the airport. Eyewitness accounts suggest that gunshots were fired, and several vehicles in the convoy were damaged, raising alarms about the deteriorating security situation in the region.
“This incident is not an isolated case but part of a disturbing trend of political intimidation and violence that threatens the democratic process in Sokoto State,” said Hon. Muhammad Bello Goronyo, the Director General of the ADC's gubernatorial campaign council. He urged the Nigeria Police Force, the Department of State Services (DSS), and the Sokoto State Government to take decisive action against the perpetrators and ensure accountability.
The ADC's concerns reflect a broader anxiety regarding political stability in Nigeria as the country approaches the 2027 general elections. With violence and intimidation on the rise, party officials warned that the current climate could undermine public safety and democratic freedoms if not addressed promptly. “We cannot allow Sokoto to descend into chaos; we must uphold the principles of democracy and protect our citizens,” Goronyo added.
