In an extraordinary display of political unity, leaders from Nigeria's two major parties, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the All Progressives Congress (APC), have come together to bolster President Bola Tinubu's campaign for re-election in 2027. This coalition, unveiled by the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, during a stakeholders’ meeting of the Rainbow Coalition in Abuja, marks a significant departure from traditional party rivalries.

The meeting convened a diverse group of political stakeholders, including current and former senators, party chairmen, National Assembly candidates, and grassroots leaders from the six area councils of the FCT. Together, they pledged their unwavering support for Tinubu, declaring him the singular candidate for the upcoming presidential election. Wike, who has taken on the role of coordinator and field commander for the re-election campaign in both the FCT and Rivers State, emphasized the importance of collaboration over party loyalty.

“I want to let all of you know that we are going to work together. Nobody should say, ‘I am PDP’ or ‘I am APC.’ For the purpose of this election, we are together,”

Wike asserted, urging party members to prioritize shared national objectives. He pointed to the recent Edo State governorship election as evidence that cooperative efforts between the two parties can yield powerful electoral outcomes, demonstrating that when political factions align on a common goal, the significance of party labels diminishes.

The coalition's formation signals a strategic shift in Nigeria's political landscape as leaders recognize the necessity of unity in achieving electoral success. By prioritizing the collective interest of the nation, Wike and his colleagues are setting a precedent that may redefine political alliances in the lead-up to the 2027 elections.
