In a significant address at the 23rd Inaugural Lecture of the Kwara State University (KWASU), Professor Taibat Yusuf has called for a more supportive credit system specifically tailored for women farmers in Nigeria. The lecture, titled “Empowering Women Farmers in Nigeria: Closing the Gender Gap for Agricultural Transformation and Food Security,” highlighted the critical role women play in agriculture and the barriers they face in accessing financial resources.
Professor Yusuf pointed out that women comprise a substantial portion of the agricultural workforce in Nigeria, yet they encounter systemic challenges that hinder their productivity and economic empowerment. The lack of adequate credit facilities disproportionately affects their ability to invest in their farms, purchase necessary equipment, and ultimately improve their yields.
The professor's recommendations include the establishment of gender-sensitive financial policies that recognize and address the unique needs of women farmers. She urged stakeholders, including financial institutions and government agencies, to develop targeted credit programs that provide women with favorable terms and conditions.
Furthermore, the lecture underscored the connection between empowering women in agriculture and achieving broader national goals of food security and economic stability. By closing the gender gap in agricultural financing, Nigeria can enhance food production and foster sustainable development.
As the nation grapples with food insecurity challenges, Professor Yusuf's insights serve as a clarion call for immediate action to reform the credit landscape for women farmers, ensuring they are equipped to contribute fully to Nigeria's agricultural sector.
