On Wednesday, teachers from the International School of the University of Lagos (ISL) embarked on a work-to-rule action, protesting against the university's failure to address significant delays in the payment of salary arrears and the implementation of a National Industrial Court judgment. This decision reflects their growing frustration over unresolved employment issues that have adversely affected their financial well-being.
The educators are specifically demanding the payment of outstanding salary arrears, including the Consolidated Tertiary Institutions Teaching Allowance (CONTTA) and adjustments related to the 25% and 35% salary increases for the year 2024. Comrade Razak Yusuf, the Chairman of the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) at UNILAG, addressed the protesting teachers, emphasizing that their action is a necessary response to the prolonged neglect of their financial and employment rights.
Yusuf highlighted that a comparable situation at the University of Abuja had been resolved favorably following a court ruling, raising concerns among the UNILAG teachers about the university's commitment to their welfare. “This is not an abandonment of our teaching duties; rather, it is a stand for our rights as employees of this institution,” he asserted, reinforcing their resolve to push for justice.
The teachers contend that their appointment letters and the years of service they have dedicated to the university affirm their employment relationship, and they argue that their roles at the International School do not exempt the university from fulfilling its obligations as their employer. The ongoing work-to-rule action serves as a call to action for the university administration to prioritize the resolution of these critical issues.
