Gunmen have claimed the lives of two young miners at a mining site in Burdinga, located in the Gashish District of Barkin Ladi Local Government Area, Plateau State. The victims, identified as Goodluck Bulus and Emmanuel Monday, both in their mid-20s, were attacked on Friday evening around 6 PM, prompting significant concern regarding the persistent insecurity that plagues the area.
The Berom Youth Moulders Association (BYM) confirmed the tragic incident, expressing deep sorrow over the loss of these young lives. Rwang Tengwong, the National Publicity Secretary of BYM, condemned the killings, emphasizing the urgent need for action from the Plateau State Government and security agencies to prevent further violence. “This incident represents yet another painful loss of young lives in a community already burdened by years of insecurity,” he stated.
Tengwong highlighted the personal tragedy surrounding Goodluck Bulus, revealing that his father had also fallen victim to violence more than a decade ago, reportedly in an attack attributed to Fulani herdsmen. This connection underscores the ongoing cycle of violence that has affected families in the region, leaving lasting scars on the community.
The BYM's call for urgent intervention resonates with many residents who have witnessed a rise in violence, particularly in rural areas where mining activities are prevalent. The organization urges local authorities to implement effective security measures to protect miners and ensure the safety of the community.
As the investigation into this latest attack unfolds, the Plateau State Government faces mounting pressure to address the underlying issues contributing to the insecurity that has plagued the region for years. The tragic loss of Goodluck and Emmanuel serves as a stark reminder of the urgent need for comprehensive strategies to combat violence and restore peace in Plateau State.
