In a shocking attack on the rural village of Binnari, Taraba state, gunmen on motorcycles opened fire shortly after Friday prayers, resulting in the deaths of at least 20 residents, according to survivors' accounts. Eyewitnesses described a terrifying scene as villagers scrambled in various directions, desperately seeking safety amidst the chaos. “People were running in different directions to escape the attack. Nobody knew where it was safe to go,” recounted Isiyaku Musa, a resident of Binnari.
While survivors have reported a death toll of over 20, local police have provided a lower figure, stating that only 10 bodies have been recovered as of Friday evening. This discrepancy has raised concerns among the community and human rights organizations regarding the accuracy of official reports and the overall security situation in the region. “After the attackers left, we counted more than 20 bodies, and some people were still missing,” Sa'idu Nuhu, another survivor, told reporters, emphasizing the urgent need for accountability and support for affected families.
The attack highlights the ongoing security challenges in northeastern Nigeria, where a long-standing jihadist insurgency, coupled with the rise of non-ideological banditry, has left rural communities vulnerable to violence. Amnesty International Nigeria condemned the incident, stating that “the consistent failure of the authorities to bring the suspected perpetrators to justice is clearly emboldening impunity.” The organization called for immediate action from the government to protect rural villagers from such atrocities, which have become alarmingly frequent.
As the nation grapples with rising insecurity, many are questioning the effectiveness of local law enforcement and the government's commitment to safeguarding its citizens. The tragic events in Binnari serve as a grim reminder of the urgent need for comprehensive security reforms and a more proactive approach to tackling the root causes of violence in Nigeria.
