Tinubu's Promises and the Dilemma of Power Ministers: A Critical Review — The Abuja Times Newsroom

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu finds himself in a precarious position as his administration grapples with the persistent issue of electricity supply in Nigeria. During a business lunch in December 2022, he boldly declared that he should not be re-elected if he failed to resolve the chronic power supply problems and eliminate estimated billing within his first term. Although he later softened his stance by allowing for 'adequate reasons' for any shortcomings, the reality on the ground remains troubling.

The appointment of ministers to tackle these pressing issues has drawn significant scrutiny. Tinubu's initial choice for the power ministry, Adebayo Adelabu, served nearly three years without making a substantial impact, leading many to question the effectiveness of his leadership. Despite boasting impressive credentials and a deep understanding of the power sector, Adelabu's tenure culminated in a focus on a lavish solar power grid for the Presidential Villa while millions of Nigerians continued to struggle with unreliable electricity.

Following Adelabu's departure, Joseph Tegbe took the helm, with expectations that his expertise in civil engineering would usher in positive changes. However, the transition has yet to yield the desired results, as the citizens remain in darkness, awaiting tangible improvements. One commentator noted that if credentials alone could generate power, Nigeria would undoubtedly be a net exporter of electricity by now.

“The only thing worse than his broken steady power supply promise is his appointment of paper tigers as power ministers,” commented a political analyst, highlighting the disillusionment felt by the populace.

As Nigeria continues to confront its energy crisis, the pressure mounts on President Tinubu and his administration to deliver on their promises. The electorate watches closely, with the hope that future strategies will bring about the much-needed reform and reliability in the nation's power supply.
