Survey Reveals Mixed Sentiments Ahead of 2027 Elections: High Intent to Vote But Low Commitment
A recent Yiaga survey indicates that while 84% of Nigerians express an intention to vote in the upcoming 2027 elections, only 41% demonstrate a firm commitment to participate. Additionally, confidence in the electoral body, INEC, has notably declined, with just 34% of respondents expressing trust in its operations.

A survey conducted by Yiaga has unveiled a complex landscape of voter sentiment as Nigeria approaches the 2027 elections. The findings show that while a significant 84% of Nigerians intend to cast their ballots, only 41% are firmly committed to doing so. This disparity raises questions about voter engagement and the factors influencing electoral participation.
Moreover, the survey highlights a concerning trend regarding public confidence in the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). Only 34% of respondents expressed trust in the electoral body, suggesting a potential crisis of confidence that could affect the electoral process. The decline in trust is particularly alarming in a democratic context, where the integrity of electoral institutions is crucial for ensuring free and fair elections.
“The findings indicate a disconnect between intention and commitment, which may reflect broader societal issues affecting trust in governance,”
said a representative from Yiaga. This sentiment is echoed by many political analysts who argue that the perceived inefficacy of electoral institutions may deter citizens from participating in the democratic process.
As the 2027 elections draw near, addressing these trust issues will be paramount for INEC and other stakeholders. Engaging citizens and restoring faith in the electoral process will be essential to ensure that the high levels of intent translate into actual voter turnout.
