Supreme Court Ruling Creates Uncertainty for INEC Candidates Ahead of Final List Release — The Abuja Times Newsroom

The political landscape in Nigeria is rife with tension as candidates from various political parties await the Independent National Electoral Commission's (INEC) final list of governorship and State Houses of Assembly candidates, scheduled for publication on October 10. This uncertainty stems from a recent ruling by the Supreme Court, the implications of which are yet to be fully understood by the electoral body.

As of Sunday, the INEC had not yet received the certified true copy (CTC) of the Supreme Court's judgment, which has left many candidates and political parties in a state of limbo. Malam Mohammed Kudu Haruna, INEC's National Commissioner in charge of Information and Voter Education Committee, stated, “The commission is yet to receive the certified true copy of the Supreme Court judgement. Hopefully we will do so tomorrow.” This delay has heightened anxiety among those affected, as time is running short before the publication of the final candidates' list.

In an effort to clarify the situation, the INEC has scheduled a meeting with political parties and stakeholders, alongside a World Press Conference. Mrs. Victoria Eta-Messi, the Director of Voter Education and Publicity at INEC, confirmed that an application for the CTC had been made, emphasizing the necessity of understanding the judgment's implications before making any announcements. “Until we do so and deliberate on it we cannot make any pronouncement on the issue,” she remarked, further adding to the palpable tension surrounding the electoral process.

As the nation approaches a critical juncture in its electoral timeline, all eyes are on the INEC and the Supreme Court's next steps, with candidates eagerly awaiting clarity on their political futures. The outcome of this situation could have significant ramifications for the upcoming elections and the political landscape in Nigeria.
