The Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) has initiated legal proceedings against the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in response to its alleged failure to account for ₦126 billion allocated for electoral activities. This substantial sum was earmarked for the procurement of essential electoral materials, including ballot boxes, sensitive materials, and accreditation devices, which are crucial for ensuring a transparent and credible electoral process.
SERAP's lawsuit emphasizes the importance of accountability and transparency in the management of public funds, especially those allocated for elections, which are fundamental to the democratic process. The organization argues that the lack of accountability over such a significant amount raises serious concerns about the integrity of Nigeria's electoral system and the potential for mismanagement of resources.
“The failure of INEC to provide an account of these funds undermines public confidence in the electoral process and poses a threat to democracy,” stated SERAP in their legal filing. The organization further called on INEC to take immediate steps to disclose how the ₦126 billion was utilized and to ensure that all electoral materials are procured in a manner that upholds the principles of transparency and accountability.
This legal action comes at a time when the credibility of Nigeria's electoral processes is under intense scrutiny, with calls for reforms aimed at enhancing transparency and public trust. SERAP's initiative is seen as a pivotal step in the fight for accountability in governance and the electoral management system.
