Saudi Arabia Denies Nigeria's Request for Increased Hajj Slots for 2027
Nigeria's allocation for the 2027 Hajj pilgrimage remains capped at 50,000 slots, as Saudi Arabia declines the country's request for additional spaces. This decision maintains the distribution of 35,000 slots for government pilgrims and 15,000 for licensed tour operators.

Nigeria's aspirations for a higher allocation of Hajj slots for the 2027 pilgrimage have been thwarted as Saudi Arabia has officially rejected the country's request. This decision solidifies Nigeria's total allotment at 50,000 pilgrims, comprising 35,000 slots designated for government pilgrims and 15,000 for licensed tour operators.
The allocation of Hajj slots is a significant issue for many Nigerian Muslims, who view the pilgrimage as a vital religious duty. The fixed number of slots has sparked concerns among potential pilgrims, especially given the increasing population of Muslims in Nigeria, who have been advocating for a larger share of the slots to accommodate the growing demand.
Officials from Nigeria's Ministry of Religious Affairs expressed disappointment with the outcome, emphasizing the need for expanded access to the sacred pilgrimage. In previous years, similar requests have been made, but the Saudi authorities have maintained strict controls over the number of pilgrims allowed from each country, citing logistical and infrastructural limitations during the Hajj season.
“The allocation is a reflection of the ongoing negotiations between Nigeria and Saudi Arabia, and while we respect their authority, we will continue to advocate for more slots in future discussions,” a ministry official commented.
This decision by the Saudi government is expected to reignite discussions on the management of Hajj logistics and the preparation required for the upcoming pilgrimage, as stakeholders in Nigeria seek to better serve their constituents in light of the fixed quota.
