President Bola Tinubu has officially approved an 18-month extension for the tenures of Sylvester Ndidi Nwakuche and Kemi Nanna Nandap, the Controller-General of the Nigerian Correctional Service and the Comptroller-General of the Nigeria Immigration Service, respectively. This decision comes as part of a strategic effort to address potential succession gaps in these vital institutions, allowing their boards adequate time to appoint suitable successors.

With this extension, Nwakuche's tenure is now set to conclude on May 26, 2028, while Nandap will serve until June 30, 2028. The extension was recommended by the Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, who highlighted the importance of continuity in leadership amidst ongoing reforms within both services.

President Tinubu commended both Nwakuche and Nandap for their contributions and the reforms implemented under their leadership, urging them to further consolidate the progress made thus far. Nwakuche was appointed to his role as Controller-General in December 2024, with Senate confirmation following in March 2025, while Nandap took on her responsibilities as Comptroller-General in March 2024 after being nominated earlier that year.

“The need for stability in leadership within our security agencies cannot be overstated, especially during times of transition,” President Tinubu remarked in his address.

This extension reflects the administration's commitment to maintaining effective governance and operational efficiency within Nigeria's correctional and immigration services, ensuring that ongoing reforms continue to bear fruit.
