Political Motives Behind Renewed Allegations Against Atiku Abubakar, Claims Okonkwo
Kenneth Okonkwo, spokesperson for Atiku Abubakar, argues that recent allegations against the former vice-president are politically motivated attempts to hinder his candidacy for the 2027 presidential election.

In a recent appearance on Channels Television’s Sunrise Daily, Kenneth Okonkwo, the spokesperson for Atiku Abubakar, has alleged that the revival of old allegations against the former vice-president is a calculated move to obstruct his participation in the upcoming 2027 presidential elections. Okonkwo, who represents the African Democratic Congress (ADC), emphasized that these allegations are unfounded and politically motivated.
The scrutiny surrounding Atiku’s past, particularly accusations linked to former US Congressman William Jefferson, has resurfaced, with investigations dating back to 2005 and 2006 being revisited. Okonkwo vehemently dismissed these allegations, stating that prior investigations had not substantiated any claims of wrongdoing on Atiku's part, asserting, “Atiku Abubakar was completely exonerated.”
Questioning the timing of this renewed scrutiny, Okonkwo highlighted a troubling pattern where similar allegations tend to emerge during election cycles. He criticized the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) for its ongoing interest in the matter, suggesting that such actions could potentially disrupt the integrity of the electoral process leading up to 2027.
“Every election year we’ll come back to the bars,” Okonkwo remarked, indicating that this cyclical return to past allegations is a strategy employed by political adversaries. He expressed confidence that these attempts would not undermine Atiku’s potential support among voters, stating, “But again, is this capable of rubbing off the gains that he’d likely get at the polls? No, it will not.”
Okonkwo’s comments underscore a broader concern regarding the intersection of politics and judicial scrutiny in Nigeria, particularly as the nation gears up for a pivotal electoral period. The ADC spokesperson's assertions reflect a belief that political interests are at play, seeking to impede Atiku Abubakar's vision for a better Nigeria.
