Police Special Fraud Unit Launches Major Investigation into Billions in Oil Sector Fraud
The Police Special Fraud Unit has initiated a probe into a massive fraud scheme in Nigeria's oil and gas sector, potentially involving billions of dollars. Allegations include contract padding and corruption attempts aimed at obstructing the investigation.

The Police Special Fraud Unit (SFU) based in Ikoyi, Lagos, has launched a comprehensive investigation into alleged fraudulent activities in Nigeria's oil and gas sector, with claims that the fraud may amount to billions of dollars. The inquiry was prompted by a series of complaints from concerned citizens and intelligence reports indicating that this could be one of the most significant scams to plague the industry.
One notable case under investigation involves allegations of contract padding exceeding $90 million, as highlighted by an anti-corruption group. This revelation has stirred unease among certain individuals who are purportedly making attempts to derail the investigation, including submitting petitions against the Commissioner of Police overseeing the SFU and his officers.
“The integrity of the investigation is paramount, and we will not be swayed by external pressures,” a source close to the investigation emphasized.
Reports suggest that the investigative team has resisted bribery attempts from a key figure implicated in the alleged fraud, leading to retaliatory actions including blackmailing efforts directed at the unit. Consequently, the Commissioner of Police in charge of the SFU has been called to present an account of the unit’s operations before the Police Service Commission.
Compounding the matter, a non-governmental organization has threatened to escalate the issue to both the National Assembly and the American Senate if any efforts to obstruct the investigation are detected, particularly given that some of the companies involved reportedly have connections to the United States. This highlights the potential international ramifications of the case, further emphasizing the necessity for transparency and accountability within Nigeria's critical oil sector.
