The Western Ports Police Command has taken decisive action in response to escalating tensions regarding the sale of revenue tickets along the Apapa and Tin Can Island port corridors, a crucial area for maritime transport in Lagos. The dispute arose between the Committee of Maritime Transport Unions and Associations (COMTUA) and the Lagos State Trucks and Cargo Operators Committee (LASTCOC), leading to allegations of illegal ticket collection on access roads to the ports.
In light of these developments, the Commissioner of Police for the Western Ports Command convened a peace meeting, aiming to foster dialogue and address the grievances of both parties. The meeting, held at the Command Headquarters, included key figures from the police force, including Deputy Commissioners of Police, the Area Commander for Tin Can Island, and representatives from the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA).
Yinka Aroyewun, the National President of COMTUA, emphasized the importance of maintaining peace during the discussions. Both parties ultimately agreed to refrain from actions that could disrupt law and order in the port corridors, a crucial commitment given the heavy traffic and economic activity in this region.
“We must ensure that our operations do not lead to chaos or disruption along these vital corridors,” said the Commissioner of Police during the meeting, urging cooperation between the two factions.
This intervention by the police underscores the critical importance of governance and regulatory oversight in the maritime sector, as authorities work to ensure that operations at one of Nigeria's busiest ports remain smooth and lawful.
