The Bayelsa State Police Command has announced the arrest of 23 suspected cultists following a series of operations in Yenagoa, where violent confrontations between rival cult groups have become increasingly common. The police intervention comes in response to growing concerns about public safety as these groups engage in violent attacks and retaliatory actions against one another.
Police spokesperson, Asinim Butswat, revealed that the suspects were taken into custody during targeted operations aimed at dismantling the networks of these cult groups. In addition to the arrests, law enforcement officials reported recovering several firearms, which were believed to be intended for use in ongoing turf wars.
The rise in cult-related violence in Yenagoa has prompted calls for more robust measures to address the issue. Local community leaders and residents have expressed alarm over the frequency of violent incidents, urging the government to take decisive action to restore peace. As part of the broader strategy, the police have pledged to intensify patrols and community engagement to deter further violence.
“We are committed to ensuring that our communities are safe and free from the menace of cultism,” said Butswat. “These arrests are just the beginning of our efforts to tackle this pressing issue.”
The situation remains tense as rival groups continue to vie for control, and the police's efforts to contain the violence will be closely monitored by both the public and stakeholders in security. The authorities are hopeful that these recent measures will lead to a significant decrease in cult-related activities in the state.
