Onaiyekan Urges Igbos to Make Independent Voting Choices Ahead of 2027 Elections
In response to Governor Soludo's remarks on the 2027 presidential election, former Archbishop Onaiyekan advocates for Igbo autonomy in political decision-making. He emphasizes that no individual should dictate the voting preferences of the Igbo people.

Former Archbishop of Abuja, John Onaiyekan, has spoken out against the notion that any individual, including Anambra State Governor Charles Soludo, should influence the voting decisions of the Igbo populace in the upcoming 2027 presidential elections. This statement comes in light of Soludo's assertion that Igbos should avoid 'wasting their votes' on Peter Obi, the candidate from the Nigeria Democratic Congress, whom he believes lacks a viable path to victory.
Onaiyekan argues that such declarations undermine the democratic rights of the Igbo people, insisting that they are capable of making their own informed decisions regarding whom to support in the elections. “The people of the Southeast must assert their right to choose their leaders without undue influence from others,” he stated during a recent engagement.
Governor Soludo's comments have sparked considerable debate within the region, with many Igbos expressing concern over the perceived imposition of voting preferences. Critics of Soludo's stance argue that it diminishes the agency of the electorate and could lead to disillusionment among voters who feel their choices are being dictated by political elites.
In a political landscape where regional sentiments are often at play, Onaiyekan's call for independence resonates with those who advocate for a more nuanced approach to electoral participation. He encourages the Igbo community to prioritize their interests and values over external pressures as they prepare for the elections.
