The Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ) has joined forces with the Maryam Babangida National Centre for Women Development to call for a more pronounced focus on gender-sensitive journalism within the media landscape. This collaboration is seen as crucial for amplifying women’s voices and improving the public's understanding of policies designed to benefit women and girls in Nigeria.

According to representatives from both organizations, increased media engagement on gender issues can play a pivotal role in ensuring that women's contributions and challenges are adequately represented. They argue that a sustained partnership between the media and the Centre could lead to improved accountability for programs aimed at enhancing the lives of women, thereby fostering a more equitable society.

“The media has a significant role in shaping narratives around gender issues. By prioritizing gender-sensitive reporting, we can help drive policy changes that directly benefit women and girls,” a spokesperson from the NUJ remarked.

The joint initiative comes at a time when discussions around gender equality and women's rights are increasingly gaining traction in Nigeria. Both the NUJ and the Women’s Centre believe that through strategic media campaigns and collaborations, they can influence public perception and policy formulation significantly.

As part of their efforts, the organizations plan to conduct workshops and training sessions for journalists, equipping them with the necessary tools and knowledge to report effectively on gender issues. This initiative aims not only to elevate women’s voices but also to ensure that gender-sensitive journalism becomes an integral part of Nigeria’s media practice.
