Nigeria is facing a significant challenge in meeting the growing demand for orthodontic care, as highlighted during the 20th anniversary conference of the Nigerian Association of Orthodontists (NAO) held in Lagos. Experts in the field have called for an increase in the number of orthodontists and a broader access to specialized dental services, particularly for those with craniofacial conditions. The association's leaders believe that enhancing training programs and healthcare infrastructure is vital to address the needs of the population.
Professor Idia Izayi-Iyamu, the National President of NAO and Chief Medical Director at the University of Benin Teaching Hospital, articulated the necessity for orthodontists to adapt to evolving healthcare demands. "When we started 20 years ago, we were looking at it straight on, which is what we call one dimension. But if you look at life and the world we live in now, it is round. That is a 360-degree perspective,” she stated, emphasizing the importance of a holistic approach that encompasses ethics, technology, mentorship, and clinical excellence.
The experts also underscored the potential of artificial intelligence and digital technology to bridge the gap in specialist care. By leveraging these technologies, orthodontists can extend their reach to underserved communities, ensuring that more Nigerians receive the care they need. However, they cautioned that while technology can enhance practice, it should complement professional clinical judgment rather than replace it.
This anniversary serves as a pivotal moment for the NAO to reflect on its achievements and chart a course for the future. As the demand for orthodontic services continues to rise, the need for strategic investments in training and technology becomes increasingly critical. With a commitment to improving access to care, the NAO aims to elevate the standard of orthodontic practice in Nigeria and ensure that all citizens have the opportunity to receive quality dental care.
