Nigeria has made a significant advancement in international standards by signing the Mutual Recognition Arrangement (CIPM MRA) of the International Committee for Weights and Measures (CIPM) during the 28th General Conference on Weights and Measures held in France. The agreement, which was signed by Dr. Ifeanyi Chukwunonso Okeke, the Director-General of the Standards Organisation of Nigeria (SON), marks a pivotal moment for the nation as it aligns itself with globally recognized measurement standards.
This signing coincided with Dr. Okeke's third anniversary in office and signifies Nigeria's commitment to enhancing its measurement capabilities. According to a statement from SON’s Director of Corporate Affairs, Mrs. Ethan Talatu, Nigeria's status as an Associate State of the International Bureau of Weights and Measures (BIPM) will officially take effect on June 4, 2026. This recognition positions Nigeria among a select group of African nations, including Egypt, Kenya, Morocco, South Africa, and Tunisia, that have achieved full BIPM membership.
Dr. Okeke emphasized the far-reaching implications of this arrangement, stating that it will facilitate international recognition of Nigeria’s measurement capabilities and lead to global acceptance of its calibration certificates. He noted that this development will not only streamline trade across borders but also reduce reliance on foreign metrology services, thereby strengthening SON’s technical authority within the region.
Furthermore, the CIPM MRA is designed to provide a framework for national metrology institutes to demonstrate that their measurement standards are equivalent, thereby fostering scientific collaboration and capacity building. This is particularly beneficial for manufacturers and small businesses in Nigeria, as it allows for local testing of products, thereby enhancing trust and quality assurance in the marketplace.
