During the ongoing Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD COP17) in Armenia, Nigeria and France have jointly called for a more robust political commitment and increased financial investments to expedite the realization of the 30x30 biodiversity target. This ambitious global goal aims to safeguard 30 percent of the planet’s land and marine areas by the year 2030, a critical step in combatting the ongoing biodiversity crisis.
The appeal was made during the Target 3 Action Day, where delegates highlighted the urgent need for collective action and innovative financing mechanisms that would enable countries to meet their biodiversity commitments. The Nigerian delegation underscored the importance of collaborative frameworks that not only support national initiatives but also foster international partnerships aimed at reversing the trends of biodiversity loss.
Nigeria’s Minister of Environment, who spoke at the event, stressed that achieving the 30x30 goal is not merely an environmental issue but a fundamental necessity for sustainable development and climate resilience. “We must act decisively and collectively, as the health of our ecosystems directly impacts our societies and economies,” he stated, urging nations to prioritize biodiversity in their developmental agendas.
“The protection of biodiversity is a shared responsibility that transcends borders. Only through concerted efforts can we hope to protect our planet for future generations,” added the French representative, echoing the call for a unified approach.
As discussions progress at COP17, the commitment of both Nigeria and France serves as a beacon for other nations to step up their efforts and ensure that the 30x30 target becomes a reality. With the clock ticking towards the 2030 deadline, the international community faces a pivotal moment in the fight against biodiversity loss, and the need for immediate action has never been more pressing.
