As the political landscape heats up ahead of the upcoming elections, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) candidate for the Abia South senatorial seat, Dr. Kasarachi Enyinna Michael, has called on voters to support him to ensure continuity and effectiveness in governance should Peter Obi win the presidency. Speaking on the need for a robust legislative backing for Obi, Michael's campaign spokesman, Chief Emperor Ogbonna, underscored the critical role that party representation plays in the National Assembly.
Ogbonna articulated that a vote for Michael is not just a vote for local representation but a strategic decision that aligns with the broader goal of supporting Obi's presidential agenda. He stated, “If Peter Obi becomes the President and we don’t have senators in the National Assembly or members of the House of Representatives, how will he perform?” This sentiment reflects the growing urgency among political factions to consolidate power and influence at the federal level.
Highlighting Michael's contributions to the Abia South constituency, Ogbonna insisted that the candidate embodies a new era of leadership. “Michael has done so much for Abia South, where he lives and has companies operating in the area,” he remarked. The campaign aims to position Michael as the linchpin for bringing local interests to the national stage, ensuring that the voices of Abia South residents are heard.
In his statements, Ogbonna also warned of the risks of not having NDC members in key legislative positions. He pointed out the potential for political upheaval if other parties dominate the National Assembly, citing past instances where opposition forces have undermined elected officials. “Assuming the APC or other parties have the majority, they will just gang up and impeach him,” he cautioned, referencing similar political dynamics witnessed in Anambra State.
As the election approaches, the NDC's strategy in Abia South highlights the interconnectedness of local elections and national political outcomes, pushing voters to consider the broader implications of their choices at the ballot box. With Obi's popularity soaring, the NDC is banking on Michael to bridge the gap between local governance and national reform.
