The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has successfully raided a suspected counterfeit drinks production facility located at Zamfara Plaza within the BBA Trade Fair Complex on Badagry Expressway, Lagos State. This operation, which led to the arrest of two suspects, Okafor and John, highlights the agency's ongoing commitment to combating the production and distribution of fake alcoholic and energy drinks in Nigeria.
During the enforcement action, NAFDAC officials seized a variety of equipment and materials used in the illicit production of counterfeit beverages. Among the items recovered were drums, filters, packaging materials, and a heating device, all allegedly employed in the repackaging and manufacturing process. According to Mr. Kunle Ojo, Assistant Director of the Investigation and Enforcement Directorate of NAFDAC, the agency acted on credible intelligence that pointed to a significant counterfeiting operation within the Trade Fair International Market.
“What we have discovered today is a lot, and it’s mind-boggling. We are here to protect the lives of many Nigerians,” Ojo stated, emphasizing the dangers posed by such counterfeit products.
The raid signifies a proactive measure by NAFDAC, particularly as the festive season approaches. The agency has ramped up its enforcement activities to ensure that public health is not compromised by substandard and potentially harmful products. This operation serves as a stern warning to those engaged in illicit trade, as NAFDAC remains vigilant in its efforts to safeguard the welfare of consumers across the nation.
