The ongoing discourse surrounding Nigeria's fuel pricing has taken a contentious turn as the Makinde/Daura Presidential Campaign Organisation challenges the sincerity of President Bola Tinubu’s N60 per litre petrol discount. According to the campaign, this discount is perceived not as a genuine effort to mitigate economic strain but rather as a tactical diversion aimed at quelling public dissent amid rising living costs.

In a statement released by Richard Ihediwa, the campaign's Director of Communications, it was emphasized that the recent spike in petrol prices—from N1,370 to N1,410 per litre—exemplifies the inadequacy of the government’s measures. The campaign asserts that such increases reinforce their stance that the discount is merely a superficial remedy to deeper economic woes, rather than a solution.

“No amount of propaganda can conceal the consequences of policies whose promised benefits are not reflected in the daily lives of ordinary Nigerians,” the statement read.

The Makinde campaign further criticized the government's overarching narrative of economic reforms, arguing that the term has become synonymous with escalating hardship for citizens. They called for a critical reassessment of the policies that are purportedly designed to alleviate economic challenges but instead seem to exacerbate them.

“Nigerians cannot continue to be confronted with the hollow slogan of ‘bold economic reforms,’ which has become a euphemism for transferring the crushing burden of economic hardship onto citizens already struggling to survive,” the campaign concluded, urging a reevaluation of the current economic strategies in place.
