'Lagos Traffic: A Lifestyle, Not Just a Challenge' - Deputy Governor Hamzat
Lagos State's Deputy Governor, Babajide Hamzat, has characterized the notorious traffic congestion in the city as an integral part of the Lagos lifestyle rather than merely a transportation issue. Speaking at PODFEST Naija, he emphasized how residents adapt to and even embrace the daily gridlock as a backdrop for their creative consumption.

Lagos State’s Deputy Governor, Babajide Hamzat, has made headlines by redefining the infamous traffic congestion that plagues the city. During his address at PODFEST Naija, he articulated that the long-standing narratives surrounding Lagos traffic extend beyond mere inconvenience, suggesting that it has become a distinctive aspect of life for residents. “Not long ago, the story of Lagos was often told by other people; it was told in headlines about traffic, crowds, and chaos. Some of those stories are not entirely wrong,” he noted, highlighting the complex relationship Lagosians have with their daily commutes.
Hamzat’s perspective sheds light on the resilience of Lagosians who, despite the challenges posed by traffic, have found ways to incorporate it into their lifestyles. “Anyone who has crossed Third Mainland Bridge at 6 p.m. knows that Lagos traffic is not a problem; it’s just a lifestyle,” he stated. This assertion not only acknowledges the frustration that comes with gridlock but also suggests an acceptance and adaptation to the reality of urban life in Lagos.
Moreover, Hamzat connected the traffic situation to the burgeoning creative industry in Lagos, arguing that many residents utilize their time in traffic to engage with various forms of entertainment. “I suspect that many of us in this room produce things that are consumed episode by episode between Ojota and Obalende. In a way, traffic has been the patron of your industry,” he remarked, pointing out that the creative sector thrives on the very circumstances that many consider a nuisance.
By encouraging Lagosians to embrace their unique traffic situation, Hamzat is also promoting a narrative of resilience and innovation. “So, you must celebrate traffic, that’s why we’re Lagos,” he concluded, inviting a shift in perspective on what it means to live in one of Africa's most vibrant and populous cities. This refreshing take on urban challenges has the potential to foster a sense of community and creativity among residents as they navigate their daily lives amidst the hustle and bustle.
