Lagos State Issues Urgent Warning Over Adulterated Palm Oil in Markets — The Abuja Times Newsroom

The Lagos State Consumer Protection Agency (LASCOPA) has issued a critical alert regarding the increasing presence of adulterated palm oil in markets across the state. This warning comes in the wake of a presentation given by Dr. Nurah Oseni, a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Food Technology at Auchi Polytechnic, during the Lagos State Food Safety Conference and Exhibition. Dr. Oseni's findings underscore the significant risks posed by this adulteration, which is now a pressing public health concern.

In his remarks, Afolabi Solebo, the General Manager of LASCOPA, emphasized the agency's dedication to safeguarding consumers from unsafe and substandard products. He stated that the agency has intensified market surveillance efforts and called upon residents to remain vigilant. “We urge Lagosians to shine their eyes and report any suspected cases of adulterated palm oil and unscrupulous traders through our official channels,” Solebo declared, assuring that any offenders caught would face prosecution under relevant laws.

Dr. Oseni's presentation, titled ‘Palm Oil Adulteration: Emerging Risks, Detection Strategies and Regulatory Control,’ highlighted the various factors contributing to the vulnerability of palm oil to adulteration. These include the high trading volume of palm oil, consumer preferences for a deep-red color associated with quality, and ongoing challenges in detecting sophisticated adulterants. She also noted the presence of carcinogenic substances such as Sudan dyes in some adulterated products, which pose serious health risks to consumers.

The implications of this warning are significant, urging consumers to be proactive in ensuring the quality of the products they purchase. LASCOPA's commitment to consumer protection reflects a broader initiative to enhance food safety standards in Lagos State, fostering a marketplace where residents can trust the quality of their food items.
