In a historic achievement for Nigerian athletics, 21-year-old Kanyinsola Ajayi has won the bronze medal in the men's 100m at the Diamond League final held in Brussels, making him the first Nigerian to reach the podium in this prestigious event. Ajayi clocked an impressive 9.97 seconds, finishing behind Jamaica’s Oblique Seville, who won gold with a time of 9.90 seconds, and Cameroon’s Emmanuel Eseme, who secured silver at 9.93 seconds.
This remarkable feat is a fitting culmination of a breakthrough season for Ajayi, who has emerged as one of the world’s fastest sprinters. Earlier this season, he shattered the longstanding Nigerian record in the men's 100m, setting a new benchmark at 9.84 seconds. This achievement not only highlights his incredible talent but also places him among the elite sprinters globally.
Ajayi’s stellar season began on the collegiate circuit, where he dominated the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) championships, claiming titles in both the men’s 60m indoor and 100m outdoor events. His wind-assisted time of 9.72 seconds in the NCAA 100m placed him joint sixth alongside sprint legend Asafa Powell on the all-conditions list, showcasing his potential to become one of the greats in sprinting.
Additionally, Ajayi also brought home a bronze medal for Nigeria at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, further solidifying his status as a key figure in Nigerian athletics. His historic podium finish at the Diamond League not only marks a personal achievement but also serves as an inspiration for aspiring athletes across Nigeria and the continent.
“This is just the beginning,” Ajayi said after his race, expressing his determination to continue improving and competing at the highest levels of the sport.
