The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Jigawa State Council, demonstrated its commitment to social responsibility by securing the release of six inmates from the Gumel Correctional Centre. The council took this significant step as part of its inaugural Press Week celebrations, which prioritize humanitarian services and support for marginalized members of the community.
According to a statement issued jointly by the NUJ State Chairman, Comrade Isma’il Ibrahim Dutse, and Council Secretary, Comrade Aminu Umar Shuwajo, these six individuals had been unable to pay the fines set by the courts, resulting in their prolonged detention. The inmates, identified as Musa Ilu (alias Gwaska), Umar Sani, Inusa Lawan, Hassan Shu’aibu, Nuhu Hassan, and Suraja Tahir (also known as Chanko), are now able to return to their families thanks to this intervention.
The NUJ's actions reflect a broader commitment to community welfare, with the union emphasizing the importance of giving back to society. In addition to facilitating the release of these inmates, the NUJ delegation also visited the Dutse Correctional Centre, where they donated essential items aimed at improving the welfare of the inmates. The donated goods included cartons of Maggi Star seasoning, May soap, Klin detergent, and sanitary pads.
During the donation presentation, the Officer-in-Charge of the Dutse Correctional Centre, CSC Muhammad Nazir, expressed gratitude to the NUJ for their generous contributions. He highlighted the positive impact of such gestures on the well-being of the inmates, reinforcing the importance of community support in fostering rehabilitation and reintegration.
