In an exhilarating clash on Sunday, veteran playmaker Isco struck twice to lead Real Betis to a commanding 5-2 victory against Osasuna, allowing them to reclaim third place in La Liga. This victory elevates Betis above Real Madrid, who now sit fourth, and puts them level on points with second-placed Atletico Madrid, trailing league leaders FC Barcelona by five points.
The match, held at La Cartuja Stadium as Betis's Benito Villamarin undergoes renovations until 2028, showcased an impressive display of attacking football from Manuel Pellegrini's side. Isco, a former Real Madrid star, opened the scoring by converting a penalty following a foul on Rodrigo Riquelme. Ez Abde extended the lead with a well-placed finish half an hour into the match, setting the tone for a thrilling encounter.
After the halftime break, Ante Budimir's own goal pushed Betis further ahead, but Osasuna responded with a goal from Budimir himself, followed by Raul Garcia, who brought them back into contention. However, Isco capitalized on a defensive error to net his second goal of the match, sealing the victory for Betis. Jose Morante added a fifth goal in stoppage time, solidifying the team's position in the top tier of Spanish football.
“Football is never truly under control,” said Pellegrini after the match. “As soon as the pace drops, the other team can pull level.” He further praised Isco's performance, stating, “He has spectacular quality and a maturity as a player that allows him to perform at whatever level he wants to.”
As the La Liga season progresses, Real Betis is demonstrating their potential to challenge for a top position, while Real Madrid will need to regroup as they aim to reclaim their stature in Spanish football.
