IPOB Advocates for National Referendum on Nigeria's Political Future

The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has intensified its call for a national referendum aimed at enabling Nigerians and the diverse ethnic groups within the country to determine their political destinies. In a statement released by its spokesperson, Emma Powerful, the group posited that the forthcoming 2027 general elections alone cannot resolve the deep-rooted constitutional and political dilemmas that have plagued Nigeria for decades.
IPOB contends that a referendum would serve as a vital platform for the populace to express their opinions on the country's structural and governance frameworks. Citing successful referendums in countries like the United Kingdom, the group underlined the significance of allowing the people to engage in a democratic process when it comes to pivotal political decisions.
The group referenced former Nigerian leaders, including Olusegun Obasanjo and Goodluck Jonathan, who have acknowledged the necessity of addressing Nigeria's political and constitutional challenges. In its statement, IPOB emphasized that while elections are primarily about the selection of political representatives, a referendum would afford citizens the opportunity to directly influence specific constitutional or political matters.
“Why should our demand for a referendum on self-determination be treated any differently from other calls for popular consultation on the future of a country?” the statement queried.
In light of its demands, IPOB has urged the Federal Government and other relevant stakeholders to embrace a peaceful and democratic approach in addressing these pressing political issues. The group's call for a referendum highlights a growing sentiment among various factions within Nigeria advocating for more inclusive and participatory governance.
