INEC Clarifies Exclusion of Pantami and Adebutu from 2027 Governorship Candidates
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has clarified the exclusion of key political figures from the upcoming 2027 governorship elections, citing non-compliance with essential electoral regulations. This decision underscores the importance of adherence to the Electoral Act as political parties prepare for the elections.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has officially announced the exclusion of two prominent political figures, Isa Pantami and Oladipupo Adebutu, from the list of candidates eligible for the 2027 governorship elections. This development arises from the failure of their respective political parties to meet the membership register requirements as stipulated in Section 77(5)-(7) of the Electoral Act, 2026.
According to INEC, the parties were found in violation of the necessary regulations that govern candidate sponsorship. The commission emphasized that compliance with these provisions is crucial for maintaining the integrity of the electoral process. “The Electoral Act is clear on the requirements for political parties to sponsor candidates, and failure to adhere to these rules results in disqualification,” an INEC official stated.
This decision has significant implications for the political landscape as both Pantami and Adebutu were considered strong contenders for their respective parties. Their exclusion raises questions about the preparedness of political organizations in Nigeria to follow electoral guidelines and the potential impact on voter mobilization and support leading up to the elections.
“All political parties must ensure they fulfill their obligations under the law to foster a credible electoral process,” the INEC representative added.
As the 2027 governorship elections approach, the focus will now shift to how political parties will respond to this setback and whether they will take corrective actions to ensure compliance with the Electoral Act. The INEC's stance reinforces the importance of transparency and accountability in Nigeria's democratic practices.
