In a significant address aimed at preserving the integrity of traditional institutions, Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde has urged monarchs in the state to remain politically neutral as Nigeria approaches the 2027 general elections. During the commissioning of the newly reconstructed palace of the Eleruwa of Eruwa, Oba Samuel Adegbola, Makinde expressed concern that traditional rulers who publicly align with political parties or candidates could become embroiled in partisan disputes, thereby jeopardizing their unifying roles.
Makinde's statement highlights the critical position that traditional leaders hold within the community, where their influence can either foster peace or incite division. He underscored the importance of these rulers acting as fathers to all political factions, stating, "Traditional rulers should accommodate all political candidates who come to them for royal blessings and support." This call for inclusivity is particularly pertinent as the political landscape heats up in anticipation of the forthcoming elections.
Emphasizing the need for stability, the governor warned, "They should not be seen to have favourites among the political contenders." By maintaining neutrality, traditional rulers can help to ensure that their communities remain cohesive, regardless of differing political beliefs. The remarks serve as a reminder of the traditional institution's vital role in Nigeria's democratic process.
Furthermore, Makinde's own elevation to the chieftaincy title of Aare Asoludero of Ibarapaland, alongside his wife, highlights the intertwined nature of tradition and modern governance in Nigeria. As political tensions rise, the governor's admonition for neutrality among monarchs is a timely reminder of the potential consequences of partisanship in traditional leadership.
