In a firm response to allegations surrounding the arrest of Alhaji Wakiil Goni Mama, commonly referred to as Mai Salati, Yobe State Governor Mai Mala Buni has rejected suggestions of political motivations behind the military's actions. Speaking at the swearing-in ceremony for commissioners and local government chairmen in Damaturu, Buni emphasized that the military's role should remain free from political influences, urging the community to respect this separation.
Governor Buni's remarks come in the wake of public outcry and speculation that he orchestrated the arrest of the politician due to political differences. He stated, “I have no history of opposition bullying,” asserting that threatening political opponents contradicts his principles. The governor has directed the chairman of Geidam Local Government Area to engage with military authorities regarding the case and to involve community elders in the discussions.
Mai Salati was reportedly arrested in early October by troops of the Nigerian Army's Operation Hadin Kai, accused of providing logistical support to individuals connected with insurgent activities. Following his arrest, various factions have claimed that the governor's actions were politically motivated, a charge Buni firmly denies.
“It is not in my principle to threaten opposition,” Buni reiterated, underscoring his commitment to maintaining a civil political environment.
In conclusion, Governor Buni's insistence on the apolitical nature of the military's involvement in this case highlights the ongoing tensions in Nigeria's political landscape, which continue to be scrutinized for potential misuse of military power in civilian matters. As discussions unfold, the separation of military and political spheres remains a crucial topic for governance in Nigeria.
