Fraud Syndicates Target 125 Business Owners in Lagos Markets
Lagos police have uncovered a disturbing plot by fraud syndicates targeting 125 business owners across major markets, leading to a series of kidnappings and ransom demands. Recent arrests reveal a broader operation that uses deceptive schemes to exploit successful traders.

In a shocking revelation, Lagos State Police have identified a calculated scheme by fraud syndicates aimed at over 125 business owners operating in key markets across the city. These criminals have meticulously studied their targets, pinpointing successful traders and devising elaborate ruses to lure them into seemingly lucrative business deals, only to exploit them for financial gain.
However, the extent of this operation has escalated beyond mere fraud. In alarming instances, victims have been kidnapped, held hostage, and coerced into paying substantial ransoms for their release. A notable case involved a tyre merchant who was deceived into traveling to the Aiyetoro-Itele area of Ogun State, where he was captured and forced to pay a ransom of approximately N24 million before being freed.
The police's investigation took a significant turn following the arrest of seven suspects linked to two separate fraud syndicates by the Anti-Kidnapping Unit of the Lagos State Police Command, led by CSP Sunday Cirman. This breakthrough occurred when one of the gangs attempted to ensnare a cloth seller in Ayobo, Lagos, unaware that police were already monitoring their activities. The swift police intervention led to the arrest of three gang members and the subsequent discovery of a list detailing the names of over 125 targeted business operators.
“This incident highlights the urgent need for vigilance among traders,” said CSP Cirman. “We urge business owners to remain cautious and report any suspicious activities to the authorities.”
The police have intensified their operations to dismantle these fraud syndicates, warning traders about the risks associated with seemingly profitable deals that may ultimately lead to their exploitation. As these investigations continue, the safety of Lagos' business community remains a top priority for law enforcement agencies.
