In a compelling call to action, Professor Wasiu Adeyemi Jimoh, a distinguished figure in Agriculture and Fisheries at the University of Ilorin, has urged the Nigerian Federal Government to prioritize aquaculture as a pivotal element of the country's food security and economic development strategy. During his 306th inaugural lecture titled “Green Feeds, Healthy Fish: Enhancing Aquaculture Productivity,” Jimoh highlighted how sustainable practices in aquaculture could significantly contribute to national growth and reduce reliance on fish imports.
Jimoh articulated that the enhancement of this sector requires substantial investment in research, innovation, and the commercialization of homegrown technologies. He stated, “Investment in aquaculture will accelerate the transition towards a resilient, environmentally sustainable, and globally competitive industry, capable of creating employment, reducing import dependence, and contributing significantly to national economic development.” His insights underscore the potential for aquaculture to not only support food nutrition but also to generate jobs in a country where unemployment remains a pressing issue.
Furthermore, Jimoh pointed out that a strategic implementation of proposed measures could transform aquaculture into a robust sector that not only sustains the environment but also thrives economically. He emphasized that through enhanced human capacity development and targeted funding, Nigeria could establish a competitive aquaculture industry that meets both local and global demands.
The professor's recommendations come at a time when Nigeria is grappling with food security challenges, necessitating a shift towards innovative agricultural practices. By investing in aquaculture, the government could foster a self-sufficient food system and ensure sustainable livelihoods for its citizens.
