The local government councils in Enugu State are poised to address a longstanding financial obligation by initiating the payment of gratuities that have been in arrears for up to 25 years. Starting this October, each council will dedicate 10% of their monthly allocations to these payments, signalling a significant move towards rectifying past injustices faced by retired government employees.
Retirees and their families have long expressed frustration over the delays in receiving their gratuity payments, which are critical for their financial stability after years of public service. The decision to allocate a portion of the councils' monthly budgets towards this cause has been met with optimism from various stakeholders, including former workers and their advocates.
A local government official, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, highlighted the importance of this initiative, stating,
“This is a step in the right direction, and we hope it will bring some relief to those who have suffered for too long without their deserved benefits.”The move is expected to enhance the welfare of retirees and restore some level of trust in the local government systems.
As the councils embark on this payment plan, it remains to be seen how effectively they will manage their budgets to honor this commitment consistently. Observers will be monitoring the situation closely to ensure that this promise translates into tangible benefits for the affected retirees.
