In a bold declaration, Edo State Governor Monday Okpebholo has made it clear that he will not hesitate to sign the death warrants of four convicted kidnappers if they do not file appeals against their sentences within the stipulated period. The governor's comments came during a fellowship event at God's People Worldwide Prayer Ministry, where he reviewed his administration's ongoing battle against kidnapping, cultism, and other forms of violent crime in the state.
Governor Okpebholo expressed that insecurity was one of the most pressing issues he inherited upon taking office. He recounted discussions with President Bola Tinubu regarding the urgent need to enhance both road safety and security in Edo State, which he described as critical. “I raised the state of the roads and the security situation with the President, who assured me of his support to tackle these challenges,” Okpebholo stated.
Reflecting on a recent incident at the Vegetable Market in Benin City, where kidnappers had struck, the governor recounted how he swiftly contacted the Commissioner of Police to ensure the perpetrators were apprehended. “I already have an approval from God, and they were caught within that time,” he noted, underscoring his commitment to restoring safety in the state.
The governor's remarks raise significant questions about the balance between justice and the potential implications of capital punishment in Nigeria. He added, “They are already sentenced to death, and I pray they don’t appeal the judgment. Even when they appeal the judgment, they are only delaying time. If within the days stipulated, they don’t appeal, I will execute.” This declaration has ignited discussions about the role of state authority in enforcing capital punishment amidst ongoing debates about human rights and crime prevention strategies.
