The Joint National Association of Persons With Disabilities (JONAPWD) has made a compelling case for an annual budget of ₦1 trillion to support the needs of persons with disabilities in Nigeria. The association's president highlighted that the significant size of this demographic warrants urgent government attention and funding to improve their living conditions and access to essential services.
In a statement, JONAPWD's leadership noted that many individuals with disabilities face systemic barriers that hinder their full participation in society. These barriers include inadequate access to healthcare, education, and employment opportunities, which are exacerbated by a lack of financial support from the government.
“The population of persons with disabilities in Nigeria is substantial, and it is imperative that the government recognizes this by committing the necessary resources,” the association's president stated. He further emphasized that an increase in funding would not only empower individuals with disabilities but also promote their integration into the broader society.
This call for a ₦1 trillion budget reflects a growing demand for inclusivity and equality in Nigeria, as disability rights advocates continue to press for policies that address the unique challenges faced by their communities. The association believes that adequate funding is critical to ensuring that persons with disabilities can lead dignified and independent lives.
