In a recent statement, former Governor of Bayelsa State, Seriake Dickson, has weighed in on the ongoing tensions within the National Democratic Coalition (NDC) regarding the formation of its presidential campaign council ahead of the 2027 elections. Although he refrained from naming specific factions, it is widely understood that his comments were directed towards the OK Movement, a support group that has been advocating for a more prominent role in the campaign's organizational structure.
According to Dickson, the authority to create and manage the NDC's campaign council lies solely with the party's leadership. "Support groups play a critical role in mobilization and grassroots engagement, but they do not have the mandate to dictate the terms of our campaign strategy or structure," he stated, emphasizing the importance of unity and discipline within the party.
The tensions between the NDC leadership and various support groups, including the OK Movement, have been escalating as the party gears up for a challenging election cycle. Dickson's comments serve as a reminder of the need for cohesion, urging party members to focus on collective goals rather than individual ambitions. "We must come together and present a united front if we are to effectively challenge the opposition in the upcoming elections," he added.
"The leadership has the responsibility to guide the campaign's direction, and we must respect that framework to ensure our success in 2027," Dickson remarked.
This internal strife reflects broader challenges within Nigerian political parties, where factions often vie for influence and control, potentially undermining the party's overall effectiveness. As the NDC prepares for the elections, the dynamics between leadership and support groups will be critical in shaping its campaign strategy and electoral prospects.
