Nigeria is gearing up for its 2027 general elections in less than four months, yet the atmosphere is thick with skepticism regarding the electoral process. Many citizens remain unconvinced by the Independent National Electoral Commission’s (INEC) assurances of a free and fair election, given the agency's historical challenges in maintaining its commitments. The widespread doubt is not unwarranted; past elections have demonstrated a pattern of unfulfilled promises, particularly in the deployment of technology that was meant to enhance transparency.
During the lead-up to the 2023 elections, INEC promised that its operations would be anchored on modern technologies, including both manual and electronic collation of votes. However, the commission's failure to deliver on these promises has left many questioning its credibility. “The commission did not convey any iota of remorse for misleading people,” noted political commentator Tonnie Iredia. This lack of accountability has led to a pervasive belief that the electoral process is intrinsically flawed.
The aftermath of the last elections saw numerous disputes over results, with many citizens rejecting outcomes that they perceived as unjust. The situation raises critical questions about the efficacy of the judiciary in resolving electoral grievances. Iredia emphasizes that while the Supreme Court's rulings are to be respected, it does not inherently validate the legitimacy of all electoral outcomes. “There is a particular governorship election where our apex court had ruled that the correct candidate of the winning party was candidate A. On its part, INEC eventually declared candidate B as the winner,” he stated, highlighting the disconnect between judicial decisions and electoral declarations.
As the country approaches the upcoming elections, the need for reform within the electoral process has never been more pressing. Citizens are calling for greater transparency and accountability from INEC to restore faith in Nigeria's democratic institutions. Without significant changes, the upcoming elections may only serve to deepen the existing disillusionment among the electorate.
